If you follow any of the “popular” Mommy blogs, you have – at some time or another – heard about Nie Nie.
NieNie writes her wildly popular blog and has a great following. She’s part of the HUGE and really supportive Mormon MommyBlogger community (HI GIRLS!!!) and was thrust further in the notoriety after a horrific accident and hard-earned recovery.
I read her blog occasionally, often just doing a quick skim because I find her to be a little too oppositely opinionated than me for my taste. That’s fine though. We’re all allowed our voices and opinions, right? Right! It’s what makes the fabric of our world great – differences.
Anyway, on to why i even bring her up at all today. Remember waaaaay back here when I raved about Sid the Science Kid? I was so excited to finally find a show geared towards preschoolers what introduced, taught and implemented logical thinking (MATH! SCIENCE! DEDUCTION!) and didn’t seem to have been written for all the kids out there with miniscule gnat-like attention spans – flipping from one thing to the next with lightning speeds (Hello? Sesame Street, anyone?!)
Sure, Sid the Science Kid has its quirks (the children’s characters are kind of stereotypical) but they focus on ONE topic per episode- learn about it, experiment with their new found knowledge, play with it and then have a final round up. A perfect science education model. This Mommy with an extensive science background, and her Chaos Twins who are always experimenting, exploring and creating really appreciate the show.
So why bring NieNie up at all? Well- she recently posted (you can’t link directly to any one post on her site, but it was 8/25/2011) that her day was crap and she was in a pissy mood because she had let her youngest watch an episode that morning. She’s mentioned before that she hates the show, but never says why.
Okay, fine. But why? I can’t ask her because she doesn’t allow comments on her blog. Dislike anything you want, but when you’ve got such a big audience and people look to you for opinions, and are more likely to agree and say “Meeee tooooooo” rather than try it themselves, and to not give reasons why you hate it make the little hairs on the back of my neck bristle. It makes me question and want to know why: Is it the singing? The bright colors? The teaching of science based on fact and logic? The fact that there are only 4 kids in the whole preschool? I’d really love to know. If this were the first time she’d said she hated STSK, I’d blame it on her pregnancy (it seems to be really affecting her)- but I really don’t know.
Maybe she’ll read this and explain more. She doesn’t have to – it is just a TV show after all and just not a big deal – but I just want to know why she hates a smart little show enough to let it ruin her entire day. We think it’s pretty awesome.
