Palbums

Remember this little collage I made?  Nobody even tried to guess what it was going to be turned into – I was expecting some silly guesses from you lot…

Well, here is what this sweet thing was turned into:  PALBUMS

What the heck is a Palbum, you ask?  BEHOLD!  They come wrapped up in the sweetest little tulle bags, perfect for gift-giving.  To give you a sense of size, I placed them with my wedding rings.  IMG_0704IMG_0707 When you open them up, your little collage has been masterfully reproduced as pages of the sweetest  little photo album!  The ones I picked were real leather with a magnetic button to keep them closed.  The color reproduction of my images was spot on (a pet peeve of mine when having my images printed by others), and the pages are thick and sturdy.

IMG_0706

Each little Palbum comes with tiny little lanyard for attaching them to a zipper pull, your cellphone or your keys.  I have mine attached to the zipper on my wallet as Xiris has issues with things being attached to the car keys.

I found out that if you order more than one of these little guys, you get quantity discounts as well – so I got 5% off for ordering 3 of them (one for each G’Ma and one for me).

Palbums have no idea who I am, I ordered these of my own accord and I am really really impressed with these.  I just wanted to share them with you.

Midcentury Modern Craigslist SCORE!

One of decorating styles that we have come to love and embrace is along the lines of Mid-Century Modern/Art Deco.  Clean lines, fun shapes and colors.  We always look around at the furniture stores for modern versions of these styles, as period pieces are hard to find, but things go too far to the modern or into the cheesy 80’s “futuristic” style.  Not something we really wanted.  So I scour Craigslist every once and a while, hoping to find something useful from the 40’s to early 60’s.    Usually, the furniture section is filled with dealers trying to unload stuff, and people putting links to auctions on ebay.  But this week I finally scored!!IMG_0684

Xiris had to practically drive to the other side of the state after a long day at work to get this beauty, and I’m so glad he did! What is it, you ask?  Why, it’s a coffee table  swank bar, of course!IMG_0685 Just look at that shape!  So cool!  Unique, for sure!  We had a design dilemma when it came to coffee tables because we have a HUGE (and I mean massive!) sectional couch.  It’s deep, comfy and LONG, so we had a need for a substantial coffee table to fit the space.  Our current solution worked fine while the kids were less mobile, but it was simply four IKEA end tables pushed together into a square.  The tables rarely stay where they should be, being scooted all over the house for use as stools, forts, trains, whatever else little toddler minds decide they are.

So why did I call it a bar?  Well… LOOK!IMG_0686The top swings open, and a nice little platform can be lifted up to serve drinks from.  I know what you are thinking… “what about the kids?” and “not the best idea with the Chaos Twins around!”  Well… probably not – but I don’t have to put  liquor in it.  I already have an English antique liquor cabinet that I just love.  I think we’ll use this to store all the Wii gear, or something along those lines.  The top can be locked to prevent swiveling because there is a door that opens on the far side (I think you can see the hinge swings on the picture above).   IMG_0687 It needs a good cleaning with some Murphy’s Oil Soap (my favorite wood cleaner EVER) – and a little repair job to the veneer where the previous owner dropped it during a move.  Until that repair is done we’re not going to move it into the house for fear of the Chaos Twins causing further damage, but I will be sure to post a picture of the family room once it’s in.  Even with this damage it was a STEAL, as I just did a quick search on ebay for these and they are going for close to $2000 in worse shape than this.  The guy getting rid of it was young, didn’t really care that it was a collectible.  Aside from the small  area that needs fixed, and the lack of a key for the lock, it’s in GREAT shape – it’s not scratched and all of the hardware works great!

Finally, here’s a funny picture of Xiris tinkering with the lock from the inside.  He couldn’t even wait to change out of his work clothes, he was that excited!  It’s really cute.IMG_0691

I follow the sweet Reese Dixon, and  she is always posting all of the AWESOME MCM stuff she scores off of Craigslist and I get so stinkin’ jealous that she can find this stuff!  Now I have one score on my side!  WOOOOOO!

Buzz Lightyear Collector

IMG_0696
It’s no secret that we love Pixar movies around here…  most especially Toy Story.  SpacePirate is a HUGE Buzz Lightyear fan.  Can you tell?
This morning he ran around the house with a mission in his little head.  He collected SOME of his Buzz toys and gathered them around him and had a sweet little conversation with each of them.  It’s really funny watching him try to pick up all of the toys at the same time – he’ll bend down to grab another and a different Buzz would fall out of his arms and he’d say “Buzz!  Stop that!  Get up!” and “Awww nuts!”
It’s a trick to take him out and about these days – the Toy Story 3 stuff is EVERYWHERE, and when he sees it we have to stop so he can check it out and beg to take it all home.
I have a feeling that the movie coming out in a few weeks will be our first trip to the movie theater as a family…
Also, it's Tuesday Tag-Along. Welcome!
Tuesday Tag-Along

Today is also my day for the 2010 Summer Blog Tour sponsored by  The Work at Home Woman and Living My MoMent  If you have some extra time, swing by the other blogs participating.  a bunch are having great giveaways, others are sharing great tips.  Here's my tip (or something I never knew):  When you go to Costco, sometimes it's hard to remember the coupons from the mailer...  Did you know that you don't have to have ALL of them with you to get the coupons?  This weekend, I braved Costco on my own with the two kids in tow.  I had planned on only getting milk, bread and Pull-ups for each monkey, so I grabbed the Pull-Ups coupon and headed out.  When I got there, I remembered that I needed laundry detergent and dishwasher soap - both of which had pretty significant coupons available.  But I didn't have mine, so I just wrote it off as "oh well, rookie mistake"  HOWEVER, when I gave the cashier the diaper coupons, the registers also gave me the discounts for the Tide and Cascade!  I had no idea!!!  SCORE!

Sheep-tsy!

I’ve been SO SO SO sick this week that it’s not even funny.  First the kids with a tummy virus last week, and now me (add in a killer head cold and an ear infection)…  Not alot has been done (aside from forcing myself to have a yardsale, and a BikeHike of Chicago) while I have been huddled under kids, tissues and blankies.

Anyway, to entertain myself while having to watch Toy Story for the bazillionth time, I surfed around my favorite handmade place.  You guys know I love all things sheepie, so… for you to consider:  All kinds of SHEEPIE goodness! mosaic1ff89d70d5a5b0e15a8e982e1b355cfd94159d21

Need a bra makeover?

image

As a Mom and a woman, I know how hard it can be to get the right size bra.  I have a particularly hard time due to fluctuating weight, back-to-back kids, and lack of time to get out and try on 10,000 bras to find the right size/fit/cut/whatever.  My biggest complaint is that I can only wear cotton bras, with underwires.  HARD to find, especially supportive ones.  That’s why I have applied to have a bra makeover by some pretty awesome experts.  And if they can find a bra that doesn’t give me the dreaded third nipple from the underwire, I’d be SOOOOOO HAPPY!

I’d like to feel nice again in a bra, wouldn’t you?  And did you know that you can apply for a Bra Makeover from Playtex! Seven out of 10 women are wearing the wrong size bra, which can result in an ill fit for the rest of their outfit, back and shoulder pain, as well as bruising and digging.

Click the button above to have a chance to  fly to New York for a bra makeover with style expert Alison Deyette. Deyette is a fashion and trend lifestyle expert who has been featured on Bravo's Millionaire Matchmaker and TLC's Ten Years Younger, as well as in print publications including Good Housekeeping, The Washington Post, and O Magazine.

Now for the legal stuff: By posting this information, I am entered into a contest to win a free bra from Playtex. I did not receive any compensation for this post and thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Tutorial: Apples for Teacher

Today was “PreSchool Promotion” day for LittleMiss – so we thought we would like to give a gift to each teacher to say thanks for helping LittleMiss learn to play and share nicely with others.   I wanted LittleMiss to make the gift herself, with as little help from me as possible, and I have to say that she did a GREAT job.  Sure, there are drips and smudges – but I just showed her a picture of what I was thinking would be a good idea and she went right along.  That said, this is certainly not an original idea, but this is how we did it…
Ingredients:
  • a large apple with a good shape
  • foam paint brushes
  • simple canvas tote bags
  • Matte Finish Soft fabric paint
  • a kiddo
  • paper plate
  • a protected work surface
  • cardboard that fits inside the bags
  • an iron
Step 1:  Gather your ingredients and your kid.  Slice the apple down the middle, making sure you cut through the center of the core for the best results.
IMG_0464Step 2:  Slip the cardboard inside the bag to prevent bleed-through.  Lay the bag out nice and flat and carefully paint the apple.  For best coverage on the first use, use lots of paint and daub it on rather than brushing it on.   IMG_0467Step 3:  Turn the apple over and carefully press onto the fabric.  Push down pretty hard for the best impression.   IMG_0469step 4:   Repeat process until you have your desired design.  For our last apple, LittleMiss wanted a “bite take out” of the apple, so we used a small spoon to make “monkey bites.” IMG_0472Step 5:  Allow bags to dry.  To finish these, we stamped LittleMiss’ handprint on the back of the bag and I wrote her teachers’ names in a decorative little font.  I also drew in little apple seeds here and there on the front.   Once everything is good and dry, be sure to HEAT SET the paint as per the directions on your bottle.  Some require just a quick trip in a hot dryer, others need a good hot iron (as we had to do).IMG_0473

SewMamaSew’s GiveAway Day!

image

SewMamaSew is having their annual GiveAway Day today.  There are tons of people hosting giveaways, so if you’re bored today, be sure to hop over and see what’s out there.  I’m not giving away anything, but I love to share this link because it’s how I found SO many great blogs to follow last year.  The giveaway is broken up into a section for Sewing/Knitting Supplies & Materials, HandCrafted Items, and HandCrafted Items Supplies & Materials – so LOTS for all different kinds of crafty endeavors!

I’ll cruise around and probably enter here or there – but we’re all home sick today after a long and busy weekend.  I’m hoping the rest will help us all feel better, as tomorrow is LittleMiss’s preschool advancement ceremony.  :-)

The Dozers Knit!

I recently bought the complete Fraggle Rock series, hoping that the kids would like them (not so much, BTW) because I had such great memories of watching them.  I didn't remember this particular clip until I saw it and giggled with glee when it came on.  Of course, I saw this clip over on CRAFT this morning, so I thought I'd post it for you here too just in case you hadn't seen it yet.

Ahhh!  The things we can find on youtube

Ok Go!

I just can't get enough of these guys!  Thanks Pam for leading me back to them!  A good deal of their tracks are pumping on my iPod when I'm sweating it out on the treadmills at the gym.
OK Go - Invincible from OK Go on Vimeo.
Video for OK Go's single, Invincible from their second album, Oh No. Directed by the band, it features OK Go dragging things into a room and blowing them to pieces. This video is popular with people who like a) explosions; b) music; c) both.  Visit OK Go: http://okgo.net

I picked up the album at Amazon, I think.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks to everyone who sent me an email, a comment or  a facebook comment about my recent goings on.  It means a great deal to me to know I’m not the only one going through all this with the Chaos Twins.

We’re hanging in there, and things are getting slightly better.  I’ve taken all the “big girl” panties away, and we’re back to the Pull-Ups.  She’s not fighting it too hard.  We just remind her of the things she wants most:  A “Cinderelly”  Bike with a bell and a horn, and her own computer.    Whenever we’re in Target, we take a little trip back the bikes and she gets a gentle reminder that she can have it when she’s a big girl who doesn’t make messes.

This week we went to the gym, and when we checked into the childcare center the giant jungle gym was closed for a while because another kiddo had made a mess in it – WHEW!  I’m not the only one!

Also, an update on the tiling work:  everything is still solid and it’s not going any where!  I’m still trying to polish all the grouting haze off of the glass tile, and there is a tiny bit of wiring work to finish up.  As soon as that’s done, I will post the FINISHED product.  Already it looks fabulous, but I can’t wait to see it complete!

Anyway – THANKS for all the support, and sticking with me even though I haven’t posted much crafty stuff lately.  I have a little mini-tutorial coming tomorrow, I think.

Tuesday Tag-Along
I came across this today during my internet wanderings, and thought it might be a great way to meet some new readers and find new blogs to read.  All different kinds of blogs link up, it seems, so us crafty folks can get in on the fun too.

The Simple Mat by Custom Building Products = AWESOME!!!

Xiris and I (well, mostly him!) tiled the backsplash in our kitchen.  It was one of those spur of the moment decisions when we found that Home Depot had a “Special Purchase” of a limited quantity of glass mosaic tiles at a STEAL… and they were EXACTLY the colors we were looking for!  It really was fate that these colors were there – they match the paint color I had agonized over choosing  because we hadn’t planned on tiling so soon.  The colors play beautifully with our stainless steel appliances and the existing flecked Corian counters.  We just couldn’t be more excited out this!

I really wanted to share with you all how we got it done so fast.  It only took us about 6 combined hours of time to do this from start to finish.  Had the kids been out of the way, it would have been faster, but we were taking turns entertaining/catering to them.  IMG_0476

Anyway, we found this great product called The Simple Mat by Custom Building Products.  It’s basically a giant permanent sticker that holds the tile on the wall.  It’s specially formulated for counters and backsplashes, and will hold all kinds of tile as long as the back of the tile has lots of places for the glue on the mat to grab it.  IMG_0480IMG_0479

The sticker will stick and be permanent on any number of surfaces, and BOY it sure it strong.  There are a few places where we had to adjust what we were doing or had a change of plans and it takes the drywall down if you try to pull it off!IMG_0477

We put the Simple Mat up on Saturday night after the kids went to bed.  The mat is easy to shape to whatever space you have.  It comes in 2ft x 1ft sections, and cuts easily with a pair of (cheap!*) scissors or a utility knife.  You don’t have to worry too much about wrinkles or bubbles, because you smooth it all down with a grout float to ensure adhesion and flatten those wrinkles.  After you get it all stuck down, you peel off the top plastic and start sticking.  The instructions say you have HOURS of playtime, so there is no worry about things drying up on you before you get to each section.  One thing I wish we had done was mark level lines on the wall before putting on the mat, as the mat is clear we would have better guides for tile placement. We would gently place each sheet of mosaic, which allowed us to nudge and wiggle it to our exact placement.  Once happy with it, all we had to do was press pretty firmly and it was STUCK!  No mess, no worries of properly mixed/spread thin set.  It was AWESOME.

IMG_0481 IMG_0487

In the end, we’re very pleased with how this project went.  The $20 per box for 10sqft, we think, was well worth the price given the size of the project and having the ability to stop-n-start as needed with the kids.  Here is the kitchen at about 11pm, all tiled (minus the few cuts we had to do in the morning).  Obviously, the grout still needed done.  But CHECK IT OUT!  WOOOOOO!!!   Xiris spent Saturday morning while I was out at the nutrition doctor installing under-counter lighting.  They are so fantastic!  Can I tell you how much I love being married to a man who knows how to do this kind of thing?  *swoon*

IMG_0489 IMG_0490Speaking of grout – the instructions with the mat suggest to use SimpleGrout.  It’s also by Custom Building Products and available at Home Depot.  It’s a premixed sanded grout that comes in a number of colors.  We went with “alabaster” because we felt bright white would be too much.  Here I am grouting for the first time ever.  It was fun!  Hard work, and messy, but SO FUN!  Another beauty part of this mat – there is NO WAITING for the thin set/mastic to dry before you can grout.  In fact, the instructions suggest that for best results to grout within 24 hours, as the grouting process helps finish the tile adhesion process.  AWESOME!

 IMG_0492

All told, this project cost us roughly $300.  That’s for the tile, Simple Mat and premixed grout.  The impact is well beyond the $300 price tag, I think.  Don’t you?  The mat says it’s meant for kitchens, or basically anywhere but floors and constant wet places – and we’re hoping it holds up well.  Especially behind that GIANT stove, heat and all.    I will post a finished project picture soon, as I still need to do the final buff of the tile to remove the grout haze and put everything back where it all goes.

In the interest of full disclosure, I just want to say that Custom Building products have no idea who we are and did not ask for this review.  I am a sharing this with you because we thought it was a super product in terms of ease of use and applicability.  It’s my honest opinion.

*Xiris originally tried to cut the mat with my GOOD SCISSORS!  You know, the fabric ONLY scissors.  We couldn’t find our craft scissors, so he thought these would be second best.  I told him - “oh sure go ahead, i guess.  they’re not the best scissors anyway, they were only $50 and I’ll just go get a better pair later.”  He went out and found his utility knife after gently putting the scissors down.  hehehe.
