You may know by now that the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act will be going into effect in just a few short weeks. If you have heard anything about this Act, you will know that it was written in a very hasty manner at the height of all of the lead toy drama. As the mother to two little toy munchers, I completely understand the need for such a law. I really do - I just think that it needs to worded much better. The way the law can be interpreted right now - every single thing that is intended for use by a child 12 and under must have gone through an extensive testing process. We're talking the toys you buy off of etsy, the bibs I make - even the little baby sweaters that some of us lovingly knit and sell.
It does not matter if you make your product from materials that have been tested already. Your finished product must be tested. Just in my initial research - the tests are NOT CHEAP... at all. Expensive enough that I would have to sell my bibs for over $50 each to cover the costs.
So, take a second if you can and follow the link on the picture above. It will lead you to the places where our word can be heard. Take a minute to register over at change.org and post your concern there. President-Elect Obama will be given the top three public concerns from this website on his inauguration day - and he will address them immediately. We need to get our word heard.
While I have only sold a few bibs (with great responses) - it was truly something that I was hoping to make a little business out of. I love doing it, and it made me and the recipients happy. If this new law goes into effect as written, I can't do that.
